Three Things You Need to Know

One of the most common questions people ask about traveling in their personal vehicle in Mexico is, “What are the necessary documents to travel in Mexico?”

This question doesn’t have one answer but rather a set of answers determined by your destination and duration in Mexico.

Let’s start, first and foremost, with what you always need to have, no matter what. For any traveling in Mexico, you must bring a Passport (or Passcard) for every person traveling in your group. Second, you should have the best Mexican insurance policy for your vehicle be it car, RV, or motorcycle. If you are towing a car with your RV, both vehicles need to have insurance.

Lastly, each vehicle must have a home state-issued vehicle registration form. It must be the original and not a copy.

With that out of the way, let’s go further. There are two documents a visitor may need to get depending on the duration of the stay and the location of the intended destination.

One of the things that affect how much you will pay for Mexican car insurance coverage is the amount of your deductible. The deductible is the portion of the bill that has to come out of your pocket. The insurer won’t process your claim if you don’t pay the deductible. The general rule of thumb is that the lower the deductible is, the more expensive your Mexican insurance rates will be. However, in Mexico, you also have to decide between fixed and variable deductibles. Learn more about Mexican insurance rates below.

Driving in Mexico is not terribly challenging once you get beyond the confusion of some of the larger cities. However, officials can be challenging no matter where you go. You are expected to have a passport for travel in the country, but this might not be reviewed by Mexican officials. Your Mexican auto insurance is unlikely to be reviewed other than in an accident. However, proof of your car insurance for Mexico should be carried in your vehicle at all times to provide officials with important information in an emergency or car wreck.
